Player of the year awards

On January 24, 2017 by Vicky Alderson

Sedgefield Water Polo Club presented our ‘Player of the Year’ awards for 2016.

The joint winners of the under 13 award were Ben Alderson and Ryan Jay Griffiths both 11 for their dedication in attending 5 training sessions per week. They both represented the North East District under 14 team two years under their age and helped the team to the Silver Medal in the National Championships at Walsall. They are showing great potential for the future.

The under 17 Award went to Ben Stephenson 15 who has made some big steps forward in 2016 with being picked for The England under 17 squad for the European Championships qualifiers in Manchester in May and being picked for the England Schools under 17 team for a tournament in Malta last October where England were second. Once again Ben has great potential for the future.

The Open Player of the Year Award went to John Pratt 17 for his all round contribution to the club and being England under 19’s leading player in their International programme in 2016. John also has started to make a big impression with Sedgefield’s sister club Northumbria University in the National League.
John hopes to get a scholarship to one of the top USA Californian colleges in 2017 to further his polo career.

All these young players will be hoping to emulate the illustrious career of Scott Carpenter 27 who unfortunately was forced to retire in 2016 with serious shoulder injuries and missed the Olympics in Rio for Australia.
