The England U17 girls, led by our Emily Pilkington, opened their EU nations cup with two wins and a defeat in their group.
They then met South Africa in the quarter finals.
After an uplifting chant , the girls played Malta, who had beaten them in the opening game for the bronze medal. The girls got off to a good start with two goals in the opening minutes by Emily and a penalty to give them a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Fleur Kennedy then won the swim off and gave England another two goals.. Malta fought back and at half time the game stood at 6-4. The girls maintained their lead until the end of the fourth quarter to win 11-6 and secure a place on the rostrum.
The journey began with trials to select the team back in January in Northampton. Another selection weekend and coaches watching performance at the inter regionals lead to a final selection being made on the 14th March, only a couple of weeks before departure. The girls met at Manchester airport to receive their England kit and flew off to Amsterdam. A two hour journey took the teams to Odense on Funan Island and the girls trained, received their England caps and had an early night for the start of the competition on Friday.
Here are the girls with their medals – well done everyone!
